My family had a kirby, and while the sales tactics are horrible. The vacuums we have had (2 in about 30 years) FUCK. They have never let me down. If you want one look for one used, please don't buy one from their sales people

Reminds me of a little story a friend once told me. A while back, my friend and his wife, also a friend, were getting ready for a little get together with some friends, me included, when they heard someone at their door. It turned out to be a vaccum salesman, and i don’t remember if it was a kirby brand, or some other one, but that little missing detail isn’t so important for what’s to come. So, this salesperson, which i’ll name “Don” for ease, is talking to my friend about the “amazing speed and efficiency that this hoover can boast.” (Fyi, i’m american, my friend is british that moved to america a few years back. Don’t worry, he has all his papers and had all his shots.) Don tells them that he can provide a quick test run of the vaccum for free, and because this’ll not only take some of the stress of preparing the party off of them, but also won’t take too much time, they agreed. Something that’ll bite them on the ass later. One thing i should note is that before don started the session, he asked them to sign a simple waver. One that my friend failed to read through because they we in a hurry. Also, my friend doesn’t think things through. So, don takes the vaccum inside and plans to do it in the living room. One of the problems is that my friends have a big table in the middle of their living room, a big stone table that has varnished wooden legs. And this certain table happens to be a little broken already, while it was being brought in, the people moving it dropped it and cracked one of the legs. It was, more or less, fine. It was still able to handle it’s one weight, even someone else’s, but you had to be careful pushing it side to side, as you could hear audible creaking from it. So, don says that in order to start, they’ll need to move the table out of the way, as this particular vaccum can’t lean back like other upright vaccums i’ve seen. Just another red flag about this brand, but they didn’t care, my friends were geting a free vaccuming session. Well, my friend and don go on opposite sides of the table to move the table into the next room, and don happened to have been on the side with the cracked leg. From what my friend told me, as they just got into the next room, he saw don was having trouble and losing his grip, and next thing they know, there was a loud, splintering crack, followed by the weight of the table shifting dangerously forward, then finding himself lying on the table, now on the ground in a slanted position. Turns out that when don lost his grip, he grabbed the broken leg to help himself and broke it off, he then lost his grip on his other hand and, in fear, jumped back to save himself, leaving the table to fall with my friend still holding it, and as it landed, the other leg on don’s side broke off from the force, leaving it standing in two back legs, like a dog partially lying down. Once my friend got back up and realized what had happened, his became infuriated, along with his wife, who rushed in when she heard the loud bang. Don tried to calm them both, saying that the waver stated that is any incident were to occur during the trial, the company would take full responsability for what happened and pay for any damages to either preson or property. It did not. In fact, my friend later found out that the waver actually said that if any incident did occur, the salesperson and the company is NOT liable and NEITHER takes responsability NOR can be sued for damages to people or property. Again, my friend doesn’t think things through. After that, everyone returns to the living room, my friends contemplating on weither to close off that room for tonight and put up a foldable table where the other one was. As don is talking away about all the neat stuff that the vaccum can do, he’s pulling out all the equipment and almost seems to be talking one word by the minute. The man went one for what felt like an hour simply taking about the attachments before even starting the vaccum, and that was all in a half hour. When he finally gets to starting the vaccum, he boasts that it is not only powerful, but quiet, too. Saying that this particular was was the quietest one they had. Lo and behold, as you can guess, it was a quiet and being in a wind turbine. It was so loud, my friends nearly needed to cover their ears. And even though don had to shout over it, he still boasted that the noise was no problem, that you could even vaccum at night with no worry of waking anyone. Leaving out the many questions on that line alone, the vaccum was not only loud, but wasn’t really doing much, anyways. My friend noticed that some dirty spots that the vaccum went over looked the same beforehand. The freaking thing went over a small ball of lint that was sitting in the edge of the room, and it was there. It was the most useless thing he’s ever witnessed, a vaccum that doesn’t even suck up right. The only thing it did manage to such up, was it’s cord. Apparently while don was still boasting about how efficient the vaccum was, it managed to catch it’s cord and sucked it up, not only pulling more into itself, but went so far in, it’s own cord made contact with it’s motor. While don was freaking out ad trying to pull the cord out, my friend could hear, what he now know, was the vaccum’s motor breaking violently, and soon something in the vaccum explodes, bursting it open and sending it’s insides, dust and mechanical debris all over the place. My friends and don were in all in silent surprise. The whole room was in a mess and the floor, the furniture, and some of the walls were completely covered in whatever was inside the vaccum. For the first time since he got there, don was completely silent. Because he booked it. In the shock of it all, don just ran off while my friends were inspecting the damages. When i arrived for the party, i went up to the front door before noticing a note saying that the party was moved to the back. I didn’t mind, a backyard party is still pretty cool, the day was nice and they have a nice backyard with a cool little elivated patio. The party was still fun, there was good food, drinks (even though i don’t drink) and a lot of laughs. However, i did have to use the restroom, so when i asked, they were hesitant at first, but let me in anyways. They did tell me not to tell anyone else what i saw. Which i was i little confused (and kinda creeped out) by that, until i went in and saw a broken table and a janked up living room. I kept my word, but not before having a good laugh as i headed to the restroom. It’s been a long while since then, and their living room is a lot better looking now than when that happened, so they’re not so worried to talk about it around our friends now, but it is still embarassing for them to hear. Also, after all that, they found the manufacturer and sent a complaint, only to find it all a little more confusing than initially thought. Turned out, don did work at the manufactory as a salesman, but was fired due to, for lack of better words, being a lazy moron that didn’t do anything right. Before he left, he held onto his uniform and managed to forge those wavers i was talking about to make him look legit, then went out and tried to sell a couple of old model vaccums he got a hold of during his time working legit, and tried to pan them off as the actually ones. My friends weren’t the first people he tried this on, but were the first for all that to happen. When the company got word of what was happening, they sent don’s background papers to the police and had him arrested fairly quickly. From what my friend heard, the guy was pretty stupid, even tried to bribe one of the officers with one of the crappy vaccums. My friend said the actual manufaturers were actually pretty nice and sent an legitimate person to come clean up the mess, as well as pay for the damages. But, with all that at the end, that whole thing just makes me more hesitant to answer the door now.

Home security systems and things like Amazon Ring are a gift from Jesus. You can tell who it is at your door without having to answer it. You can avoid talking to door to door salesmen, Mormon missionaries, and Jehovah's Witnesses. It's no surprise that after many of the Mormon missionaries go home they get employed as door to door salesmen.

I only found out about Kirby when I did 911 call taking. We would get calls from the “van crews” to have us broadcast to officers that they were operating in the area, and so that other call takers would have a heads up about any possible Prowler calls in that neighborhood. They really freaked me out how even over the phone with the police, they had that worn out customer service voice.

"ignorance of the law isn't an excuse." Why not? Because the law says it's not? If we're going to have more laws on the books than a single person can read in a lifetime, it's not reasonable to claim that ignorance of the law ins't an excuse, at least when dealing with individuals in obscure sorts of laws that they would have had no reasonable cause for knowing. Want to play that game with billion dollar companies who can afford a team of lawyers? cool, but doing it to small businesses and citizens is immoral.

AAHH, YES, Kirby.😐 The same Kirby that even though at the time my high school tuition wasn't being paid, my mother still paid about $1,000 for a vacuum. First of all, it literally weighs about 80 lbs! Then one day she went to use it and it just would not move, as in the vacuum wouldn't budge 1 inch no matter what she tried. That was the second of the two times that she actually used that vacuum. She literally never used it again but she still has it to this day.

Uh... Alabama definitely is not the only state whose minimum wage is below eight bucks. 20 states either have no minimum wage law and are governed only by the federal minimum of $7.25 or have a state minimum wage law that just happens to be the exact same number as the federal minimum. And of those, two (Georgia and Wyoming) have an even lower state minimum ($5.15) that applies to workers who for various reasons don't fall under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. That's why raising the federal minimum wage is so incredibly important!

One of the few MLM's where the product itself is very much a good product. If the company could get out of it's 1950's sales style mindset, get the machine priced at even close to competitive with the other high end names, and put together a good marketing campaign, they would likely sell way more than they manage to sell door to door. I am another who did a short stint (a month or so) demo'ing the vacuum, and (at least at that time), no matter what other brand/model you put the Kirby up against, it proved to be the better machine in every head to head test you could devise.

I inherited a Kirby from an old roommate and it works well as a hose vacuum with all its attachments, but I prefer other vacuums for carpet and pet fur. The head isn't that hard to remove, unlike MLMs. Capitalist vultures... My mom also had one and I thought it was so strange that a lady came to our house to sell it. Then again, this was in the 90s and our previous vacuum was one of those types that hooked up to the wall. Yes, that was a thing. Look up central vacuum systems. There are actually some benefits, but it was a sort of passing trend in the residential market.

Point of order, they sell Kirby's at cost for about 550$ the other 1000$ helps pay the van crew. When you're just trying to meet your sales goal so you can get a base pay, you will often sell them at cost, leading to no profit to you really. And they come up with about 40,000,000,000 loopholes to not pay your base salary. And yes, they do send people into pretty dangerous neighborhoods, to walk around with a piece of equipment, that retails at close to 2000$. The office my wife worked at was in such a bad neighborhood, that my wife's car had the back window smashed out, while she was out selling. They didn't get much out of it, and the real kick in the teeth is that the doors weren't locked.

That could be what happened... having worked briefly doing demos on these machines, that was usually a case of the person saying they had to talk to the other person of the house first, so all the comparative dust pads that proved how ineffectual their current vacuum is were left as "evidence" for when the other homeowner got home. The basic sale demo went like this... go over various parts of their carpet, showing how much more dirt the Kirby picked up that was still left (and there was ALWAYS plenty to find, the Kirby machine is really good at what it does). Then to prove it beyond any doubt, if they agree, dump a cup or so of salt into the carpet in one small area, go over it 30-50 times with the owners current machine, hit it with the Kirby and show them how much salt theirs left in the carpet. Salt was used since it's the same grit size as sand and other things like breadcrumbs, but not at all harmful to have left behind in a carpet.

While I enjoyed the vacuum as it seemed to clean well it was/is heavy, hard to maneuver, expensive bags, terrible as a carpet cleaner and awkward to use as it was soooooo heavy. Run over your toe and you’ll cry hard. On the other hand, while the rainbow vacuum , which I think used to be a mlm, is outrageously expensive I put the Kirby in the garage and bought a new rainbow-Best -Vacuum~ EVER. I applied for a company claiming they sold "items to disinfect homes of covid 19" and when i went into the interview i saw one of the items was Kirby vacuums. Having grown up with one it is a great vacuum and i have learned just how much they are worth, but anyway they told me they would talk it over with her boss(her husband) and then i left and the next day i was training. In the first day of training something was off, they told us the requirements for our 500/week paycheck and they also told us they would hold the paycheck for 3 weeks because of "business regulations" they also had us sign a bunch of paperwork and when i tried to take my time to read the fine print they considered me ridiculous and made a bit of fun at me. The second day i was training they went over sales tactics and told me dustmites are the cause of the crusties in your eyes when you wake ip, stuffy noses, ect. And we had to pull 100 filter pads each demo for it to count, they also didnt really cover any of the other products and said if we sell 15 vacuums in 5 months we would get to open our own franchise under the company (not under kirby, but under the company i was contracted under) On my first day of actual work i managed to sell a kirby for 800 cash with a family discount and they talked me up because i was the only new person to sell one and it had been a week. Now whats not talked about in this video is the price breakdown of the vacuums According to what i was taught the distributor buys them for about 600 dollars, the lowest we were told we can sell them with our managers permission is 1k, and if we wanted a discount to go lower we needed the distributors permission(the owner of the place i worked at in my case) the sales manager only made money if it sold for 1300, and anything past that up to 500 dollars went to us(they told us to try and sell for 1800) Another thing they told us is that our managers would stake out the houses while driving and look to see if they had good credit by looking at the outside of houses and seeing if your cars had financing stickers/decals on them. Because if the person we sold to had bad credit we made nothing. Also for the door to door part they made us buy paper towels as a door opener and if they said no to the demo, we asked for the paper towels back so we could use them on their neighbors. Im trying to think if there was anything else that wasnt covered in the video but i think thats everything. I left after a week but they tried to get me to stay by asking me to accept another position and then gave me tickets and a script to learn when i "agreed" to try it out after they were being pushy

We had a really old kirby vacuum for almost as long as I can remember, but when I was in about 6th grade we had a Rainbow salesperson come do a cleaning or demo for us. It was neat at first but I HATED vacuuming even more than before because the vacuum you pushed was attached with a hose to a separate rolling thing with a stupid water tank... I don't really remember the demo or how much it cost, but man... I hated that stupid vacuum with a passion. Too much time spent dumping out that tank and washing it and also the whole rolling part falling and spilling down the stairs when i was trying to vacuum them 💀💀💀💀💀💀

I remember the Kirby folks coming twice when I was young. Once was trying to sell a vacuum, to which my mother showed them the Kirby we already had (at least at the time, they did actually work great! Just really expensive) that she had picked up at a yard sale and repaired herself (Though she didn't mention that), and assured them it was working great and we didn't need to replace it. Second time? We lived out in the middle of the woods in absolutely nowhere (a bird sanctuary/scout camp nearby), so people would get lost and stopped to ask for directions nearby all the time if they saw us outside. Cue an awkward group of salesmen asking how to get back to town, lol. For the record, we got some pretty amusing folks asking for directions. Salesmen, Mormons and JWs of course, deer or mushroom hunters, scout moms, random teenagers... And an ice cream truck. It was the first time I had ever seen one outside of movies (no joke, until then I thought they didn't exist outside of films), he saw my sister and I riding our bikes and flagged us down to ask for directions, so we brought our mom out to help. Wrote down the directions on an ice cream sandwich box, gave my sister and I a couple of those orange sherbert push-pops for our trouble, and took off back to town, jaunty ice cream truck music playing all the while. Still cracks me up years later that THAT was my first encounter with an ice cream truck.

First day in the van, the supervisor asked the group of guys to "raise your hand if you've been convicted of a crime" and everyone except my husband raised their hands. They started laughing and joking, saying that surely my husband was lying and had been convicted before, and even made fun of him for not having a record. He quit that same day, and after watching this video, I'm damn glad he did.

Kirby is an MLM?!?!?!! I remember coming home one day to a bunch of tiny white circles on the carpet, some Kirby vacuum door to door seller came to my house and sampled the Kirby on our carpets to sell to my mom. And it worked. In future years to be replaced by a dyson I think 🤔 HOW MUCH DID MY MOM SPEND OHMYGOD

So it's mostly a people problem, the products seem to be pretty good or at least average not actually all that bad at least that's one point in their favor

Massachusetts resident here. The Kirby Distributors used to be a menace around my area of MA. My neighbors had to call the police when a distributor (and what I'm assuming was a supervisor) wouldn't get off their front porch. Now I haven't seen a distributer in decades, but they might just not be focusing on the greater Boston area anymore.

Oof don't mess with people from Louisiana and their money. Many families have financial problems and will go to hell and back to make sure they get every penny their owned.

Let me give a slight correction here. North Carolina is also another state that has their minimum wage at less than 8 bucks an hour(Same wage as Alabama)

Kirby vacs are awesome, but more like a $700 product.

I bought a Kirby in 2001 after a lengthy, impressive demonstration in my new home. The Kirby vacuum worked well enough, but it was heavy and awkward. It would bang into my ankles when I lifted it (OUCH!!!) and dragging it up the stairs was an ordeal (@%#%!!!!). I don't regret buying it because now, when I vacuum with my non-Kirby, I appreciate the absence of painful injuries and muscle strain, and that makes cleaning fun!

Omgah! I was recruited to sell these back in 2017. I knew it was a scam after the 1st day of training 😓 stood for a week to see how they would operate and sell these vacuums, scums only targeted elderly people, knocking door by door. It was terrible! I’m on the 26:13 video mark: I was working in West Warwick, RI. Very close to MA 🧐

I own a Kirby. The only reason I don't regret it is because I needed to build my credit. My mom could barely afford food at the time and this guy came and deep cleaned our carpet in our new home and tried to sell it to us. The man was there so long my fiance came over to pick me up after work and was there for about a half hour before the guy left. He constantly pressured us to buy, starting at 2700 or so and going down to maybe 2250? I dunno, I just paid when I got the money. Luckily I didn't have many bills so I was able to pay it off nearly a year early. He kept telling us he was new and that his supervisor would be watching to make sure he was doing a good job. Of course, I was just under 19 so I wasn't fully aware of these shitty tactics. I couldn't pay for the vacuum for a couple months because the pandemic had me struggling to find work. No one could help me. The distributor number on the vacuum was only to buy more stuff and the bank couldn't help me. I'm glad I'm done dealing with them aside from getting new bags every once in awhile

I fell for this type of opportunity a long time ago when I was fresh out of high school with no prospects. It was for a competitor of Kirby's called Tri-star. Back then there were 3 main companies in the door-to-door vacuum sales biz; Kirby, Tri-star, and Rainbow, although Rainbow is really more of a carpet shampoo-er. I learned a lot about sales in the 4 months I worked there, but overall it was one of the worst experiences of my young life. Very eye-opening to say the least.

The lesson to be learned here isn't about vacuums. It's about never answering your door for anyone but the police.

My mother has two both over 20 years old but still suck like a ten dollar hooker. But yes over £3000 for both. Good vacuum but way expensive.

This reminds me a bit of canvassing for political donations. It's not the worst thing to do but the organization I worked with expected us to request a lot higher than I felt comfortable with for some people who didn't necessarily seem like they could afford it. Less than $100 per door can add up to a lot after awhile. Just remembering from Joel's story, how he said ppl were nice but he felt bad trying to pitch an expensive vacuum. Mind you, I wasn't canvassing any trailer parks, but still. It resonates.

I feel like this is one of the oldest MLMs I've heard of besides Avon, but it's always talked about as door-to-door sales instead of a pyramid scheme. Like, I've heard of door-to-door vacuum salesmen as men going door-to-door but mostly as men doing it. Same with selling encyclopedias, no company name mentioned.

Huh, I heard that the true first washing machine was invented by a house wife who was tired with how strenuous it was. (Wouldn’t be shocking if someone saw what she made and stole it, happens all the time, especially to women inventors).
